In honor of the Beatles 50th anniversary, I want to share an interesting fact that I learned a few years ago when I attended a seminar. The speaker’s opening story was about Paul McCartney’s song “Let it Be”.
As I listened to the story, I could immediately recall the words to the song and see how Paul put it together after waking up from his dream.
It was back in 1968 and the Beatles as a group were having a tough time (WHEN I FIND MYSELF IN TIMES OF TROUBLE).
The other three Beatles had met their partners and were living in the country. Paul hadn’t yet met his future wife, Linda, and he didn’t know where his life was heading.
During that time, (IN MY HOUR OF DARKNESS) he had a dream (SHE IS STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME) about his deceased mother, Mary (MOTHER MARY CAME TO ME). His mother brought him comfort (SPEAKING WORDS OF WISDOM, LET IT BE).
Paul’s mother had died when he was 14 and he said that her appearance in his dream was so comforting to see her again so clearly. As soon as he woke up he went over to the piano and immediately started to write the song.
For a more detailed version of the story, visit Matt and Jojang’s Blog. You can go on and read the rest of this post, but I guarantee you at some point you will be singing the words.
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
And when the broken hearted people
Living in the world agree,
There will be an answer, let it be.
And though they may be parted there is
Still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Let it be, let it be.
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be.
Let it be, let it be,
Let it be, let it be.
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be.
And though the night is cloudy,
There is still a light that shines on me,
Shine until tomorrow, let it be.
O, will I make up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be,
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

So often we don’t know the story behind a song and I too thought this was special Ruth. Glad you enjoyed it.

This was my mother’s favorite song and by far her favorite musician. As A child I remember her playing this song and could see the passion in her face as she sang every word. I’m now 47 and lost her a few months back to dementia. She still remembered the words and thanks to your post, I now understand them. I was just thinking of her and this song came on a radio station that you wouldn’t expect to her Mr. McCartney’s music to be played. I felt her standing in front of me. I looked up this song and here I am.
Thank you……..
