It’s week three of the One Room Challenge put on by Linda of Calling It Home. The participants are mid-way through redoing their rooms. My foyer is my challenge and it’s starting to take shape!
Chandelier Shopping
This past week I was on a mission to find a chandelier that was unique yet elegant. Our foyer isn’t very large, yet I wanted this chandelier to make a statement.
Our current chandelier is glass and brass and nondescript. It came with our house and it just wasn’t a priority to change when we moved in. I especially didn’t like the 80’s smoked glass!
The other thing that drove us crazy with this chandelier was that it was too low. Our “tall” friends bumped their heads on it.
The rule of thumb for a room with 8′ ceilings is that the bottom of the chandelier should be 7′ from the floor. Taking that into consideration, we would only be able to have a 12″ tall chandelier. That would basically be a flush mount fixture.
Our current chandelier was 22″ so those over 6′ 2″ had to watch their heads! Our new chandelier is 16″ tall so guests are good to go unless they are over 6’6″. A flush mount chandelier wasn’t dramatic enough for me so I opted for something in-between.
I wanted to stay in the gold tones as we have brass rods across each step which set the theme for the foyer. I found this chandelier from the Broche Collection. It looks like an oversized French Brooch! I knew I had to have it!
Coat Closet Doors
The coat closet which was previously a cream color has been painted black. The black doors balance my newly painted black stairs and rails.
Coat Closet Door Handles
I currently just have the former knobs on the doors. My new brass rings just came in and I love them. They weren’t exactly what I wanted so I did have to settle a little but in the big picture, I think they will be perfect. I wanted the handles to stand out against my newly painted black doors.
I am still searching for brass handles for my shutter doors between the foyer and the kitchen. They are strictly for privacy. I want handles on them to dress them up.
Remaining Agenda
I need to settle on final paint colors for the hallway upstairs and also find an area rug for the front entrance. The big challenge on the rug is that my clearance from the door is only 1/2″.
I have to spray paint my doorbell box so it blends in with the wall.
I am still looking for either a planter or entryway table to go at the bottom of my steps below my hall mirror.
This One Room Challenge is helping to keep me on schedule, even though this has been my busiest month of traveling. I have been gone more than I have been home!

Thanks Erin. The dark doors really made a big difference in the foyer and tie in nicely with my leopard runner up the steps. Two more posts till the final reveal!
