Everyone has their favorite recipe that is a must have for Thanksgiving. Mine is my grandmother’s delicious Herb Stuffing Recipe which has been in our family for decades. My mother always made it and I have continued the tradition. Think toasted bread cubes with apples, celery and onions sautéed in butter with delicious herbs. It’s fabulous!
Prepare Herb Stuffing Night Before
I love that you can prepare the ingredients (except the apples) the night before.
The key to this stuffing is toasting your own bread. It is so much better than store bought. I do it on a cookie sheet under the broiler. You have to watch the bread at all times because it toasts quickly. Flip the bread over once it is toasted and toast the other side.
We used to stuff the turkey with this stuffing but once I started brining my turkey, I began making it in a covered casserole dish. This will definitely be on our table next Thursday!
- 2 lbs. white bread, toasted and cubed, about 6 quarts
- 1½ cups onion, chopped
- 1½ cups celery, chopped
- 1 tablespoon dried ground sage
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves, crushed
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 5 apples, peeled and chopped
- 2 cups milk
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Prepare ingredients the night before except the apples. Refrigerate vegetables. Next morning, peel and chop apples. Melt butter in a large heavy skillet. Add onions, celery, apples and spices. Cook until vegetables and apples are tender.
- Add to bread cubes. Add beaten egg and milk to bread mixture.
- You can stuff the turkey just before roasting or bake in a covered greased casserole dish at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
- This recipe makes enough for 10 adults, about 10 cups. It stuffs a 15 lb. turkey, with at least half left over to bake in covered casserole dish.
