This recipe for herb stuffing for Thanksgiving has been in our family for decades. Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without it.
- 2 lbs. white bread, toasted and cubed, about 6 quarts
- 1½ cups onion, chopped
- 1½ cups celery, chopped
- 1 tablespoon dried ground sage
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves, crushed
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1½ teaspoons salt
- 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 5 apples, peeled and chopped
- 2 cups milk
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- Prepare ingredients the night before except the apples. Refrigerate vegetables. Next morning, peel and chop apples. Melt butter in a large heavy skillet. Add onions, celery, apples and spices. Cook until vegetables and apples are tender.
- Add to bread cubes. Add beaten egg and milk to bread mixture.
- You can stuff the turkey just before roasting or bake in a covered greased casserole dish at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
- This recipe makes enough for 10 adults, about 10 cups. It stuffs a 15 lb. turkey, with at least half left over to bake in covered casserole dish.
