This recipe for herb stuffing for Thanksgiving has been in our family for decades. Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without it.
Ingredients
  • 2 lbs. white bread, toasted and cubed, about 6 quarts
  • 1½ cups onion, chopped
  • 1½ cups celery, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon dried ground sage
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme leaves, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 5 apples, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
Instructions
  1. Prepare ingredients the night before except the apples. Refrigerate vegetables. Next morning, peel and chop apples. Melt butter in a large heavy skillet. Add onions, celery, apples and spices. Cook until vegetables and apples are tender.
  2. Add to bread cubes. Add beaten egg and milk to bread mixture.
  3. You can stuff the turkey just before roasting or bake in a covered greased casserole dish at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes.
  4. This recipe makes enough for 10 adults, about 10 cups. It stuffs a 15 lb. turkey, with at least half left over to bake in covered casserole dish.
