Container gardening is one of my favorite ways to garden. It’s your opportunity to dress up a porch, deck or patio. I wanted low maintenance pots this year since I will be doing a lot of traveling this summer. I chose pretty coral impatiens as my main color (no dead heading required).
I had some deep red sticks/branches in my collection in the basement that I reused in these pots. They added height to the pot and another shade of color.
This year I found hanging baskets at my local Kroger grocery store for $6.99. Such a bargain! This sweet potato ivy with greenish purple leaves was a nice contrast to the coral impatiens. They both will compliment my coral and pink color scheme in the surrounding beds.
The hanging baskets were easy to divide the plants into threes. It was not only cheaper to buy the baskets but the plants were fuller than buying individual pots with smaller ivy.
Once these plants start to settle in and grow, the coral impatiens will grow upward and the sweet potato vine will trail over the pot.
Patience is needed in gardening and I know these pots will fill out and make beautiful pots by July.

These are absolutely gorgeous! I’d love to know what the plant is that it’s in with the impatiens. Also, do you ever plant perennials in your pots?
Elaine says
Yes Lydia, you can plant perennials in your pots. My mint and chives are herbs but they do come back every year in my pots. I have planted other flowering perennials in pots and then replant in the ground in the fall. The plant with the impatiens is a purple sweet potato vine. It’s growing so fast!
