One Room Challenge | Great Room | Week Two
In this week’s One Room Challenge, I share the transformation from my gold faux finished walls to my neutral palette as our hardwood floor project.
Welcome to week two of the One Room Challenge and the remodeling of our great room.
As I mentioned last week, the catalyst for updating our home was that our hardwood floors needed to be redone. It was such a big project to take on as we had to empty our whole first floor. If there was ever a time I had to be organized, this was it. I had to coordinate every step so that the project would run smoothly.
First, I decided that I wanted to keep our existing furniture and have it re-upholstered in my new color scheme. That meant I didn’t need to store that furniture while having our floors done. My upholstery guy picked up the furniture he was going to do.
We had to remove everything else from our home and chose to rent a POD storage container that we kept in our driveway. It was a great choice!
We hired some movers to move the rest of the furniture and boxes into the POD. What didn’t fit went into our garage.
Next, I had all of our oriental rugs picked up and cleaned. I also had new pads made for each rug. The old ones had broken down over the 20 years we had them. Wow, did the new pads make a difference. The cushion feels great to walk on!
Going Neutral with Paint
Before having the hardwood floors redone, I had our walls painted. Goodbye Gold – Hello Cream.

Redoing Hardwood Floors
Have you ever had your hardwood floors redone? My biggest surprise was that the sanding of the hardwood floors wasn’t near as messy as I thought it was going to be. The company we chose did a great job in covering our cabinets, light fixtures, etc. with plastic to prevent the dust from settling in.
My next surprise was how much I liked the way the floors looked when sanded, in their natural state! The room was so much brighter and lighter.
