I have an exciting project to share with you. Several years ago I participated as a guest in the One Room Challenge. Over a five-week period of time, I showed the transformation of my foyer.  This year, I am taking on a bigger challenge.  I will be sharing the dramatic remodeling of my great room.

Goodbye 90’s – Hello 2018!

Over the next five weeks you will see the transformation from my red, gold and green color scheme to a fresher navy, cream and caramel.  I’m in love with the new colors and can’t wait to pull this all together.

Here’s a sneak peek at my new fabric selections.

Great Room Before Pictures

We have been in our house for 20 years and our great room is outdated.  It’s odd how you become so comfortable with your surroundings that you don’t realize just how dated they have become.   And then there are other reasons – life gets in the way, you get busy and before you know it, just like that, 20 years fly by.

When we moved into our home, it was 1998 and jewel tones, faux finished walls and glossy wood floors were in.   Our room was bright and colorful and for many years we loved it.

I had created three separate areas in our great room.  The largest is where we watch tv.  Our green chairs in the back of our great room have been the perfect spot for our morning coffee, reading the paper and watching the deer in our backyard.

We love to entertain and this area below has been used for additional seating for dinner parties and also is a great place to play cards or games.

The One Room Challenge

The catalyst to get this project going were our wood floors.  They took on an orange tint from age.  That just happens.  The polyurethane turns orange over time.  Between that and wear and tear, we knew they had to be redone.  So our wood floors are being updated from a glossy finish to a more trendy satin finish which almost looks matte.

We love how comfortable our furniture is and decided that reupholstering it was a better option than buying new.    Accessories and art are changing.  Walls are being painted.  Drapes have come down.  We’ve updated the chandelier over our game table.  The list just never seems to end.

When you completely change a color scheme, it involves everything!  It’s the domino effect and it doesn’t only effect one room.  You have to make sure the rest of the house flows together and the rooms compliment each other.

Maybe it would have been easier to move?  Thankfully we love our home and neighborhood and are here to stay.

That’s my sneak peek into our dramatic makeover.  Stay tuned for the next five Thursdays to watch the progress.

Be sure to visit The One Room Challenge for more inspiration from the other participants.

A special thank you to Linda from Calling it Home who organized this event.

A Personal Note

For my many longtime and devoted readers, my eight month absence on my blog has been due to a death in the family.  I needed time to grieve and heal and to handle my uncle’s estate.

My Dear Uncle Al

My husband and I had the privilege of moving our uncle near us to help care for him during his Alzheimer’s journey. We never expected that he would be gone so soon.

He taught us so much about life and living and we will be forever grateful for our time with him. RIP Uncle Al and thank you for the memories.
