Lavender Sachets are Easy to Make and Ward off Pests
Besides smelling good, there are several reasons why I love the smell of lavender sachets. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that some household pests don’t like the smell. That’s what prompted me to make these lavender sachets.
There are a few reasons I am drawn to lavender sachets. First, lavender reminds me of the beautiful scenery I saw while driving through France with my two girlfriends. In the Provence area, there were fields of lavender along the roadside. The views were absolutely stunning!
The other reason I am fond of lavender is that it reminds me of my grandmother. When I was little, she always had Yardley Lavender Soap in her bathroom. I loved how it smelled.

Use Lavender Sachets as Moth Deterrent
This past winter I had an issue with moths in my closet, resulting in some holes in my wool sweaters. Needless to say I was sick about it and had to do a thorough cleaning of the closet and determine the source.
Martha Stewart’s article, The Basics of Mothproofing said that lavender helps ward off moths so I decided to make some lavender sachets with dried lavender for my closets. Before we go any further I want to make it clear that lavender will not kill moth eggs or larvae, so you must first be sure that your closet is free of them first. It will just help prevent them in the future from making a home in your closet!
Easy and Inexpensive Lavender Sachets
I purchased a bag of organic dried lavender flowers and some ivory organza bags on Amazon.
It was so easy to fill the bags and the drawstring pouch eliminated the need to add any ribbon. You only want to make what you are going to use at that time. Keep the unused lavender in the resealable bag to preserve it. Or, if you want to have extra sachets on hand for future gifts, store them in a sealed ziplock bag.
Each pouch takes about 1/4 ounce of the lavender flowers. My 16 ounce bag of lavender will make 64 sachets. My lavender bag cost $20.99 and the organza pouches were $8.99 for 100. These lavender sachets cost less than 50 cents a piece and you will have 36 bags left over for other uses.
I have placed them in my closets and have tucked a few in my drawers. They smell so much better than moth balls and cedar.
