I grew up enjoying all kinds of exotic fruits. While most kids were into apples and oranges, I loved figs, prickly pears, pomegranates and anything else that was different! My friends never heard of these fruits. The closest they came to a fig was eating Fig Newtons.
To this day I still love figs. So needless to say when I came across this gorgeous picture of figs by Yolanda from Simply Sophisticate, I was immediately interested. In her post Everything You Need to Know About Figs, she describes the different varieties, what to look for and how to store them.
The first time my husband ever had figs was when we were visiting my uncle in California. He had a beautiful fig tree in his back yard (which overlooked the Hollywood sign!). His figs were the color of green apples. Since John’s first taste was fresh off the tree, he is keenly aware of what a fresh good fig tastes like and its hard to find them as good in the grocery store unless you know what to look for. (See article above).
Delicious Fig Recipes
Although I love to eat figs in their original state, I also love preparing them in a variety of ways. They can be served as appetizers, on flatbreads, in salads or desserts. They are so versatile. They can be served raw or cooked. If you haven’t yet tried this delicious fruit, experiment with some of these recipes that are worth trying.
