Memorial Day is a day we honor those that have served our country.
My husband grew up in the military. His father served in the Air Force. I wanted to honor my father-in-law by framing the US flag that once draped his coffin. I thought it would be a wonderful addition to our home. I like to incorporate personal items that have meaning in my decorating which, in my opinion, makes a house a home.
Frame the US Flag in a Shadow Box
The only flag frames I could find were triangle boxes. I preferred to custom design a shadow box that would not only display the flag but also become a piece of art on our wall.
I knew it had to be large to make a statement and in neutral colors to highlight the blue and white colors of our flag. I chose a white linen background and neutral frame.
I had my framer create a shelf in the shadow box to hold the flag which was still perfectly folded after 30+ years.
Personalize the Frame with a Brass Plate
To further personalize this special gift for my husband, I added an engraved brass plate with my father-in-law’s name, the year he was born and the year he passed.
I must admit this is probably the nicest gift I have ever given my husband. He is proud to have it hanging in our home.
Thank You to Our Veterans
Thank you to all of those that have served in the Military to keep our country safe. I’d like to also thank the Military families who have made sacrifices while their loved ones served.
Enjoy this holiday weekend and be safe.
Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the idea of the flag in a frame. We have my husbands Grandfathers flag in the triangle box. It does not look near as nice. Love the photos!

Thanks Sherry! What a special treasure to have your husband’s Grandfather’s flag!

This is gorgeous. I would love to do this for my husband as well. Would it be possible to get some info like dementions, is the shadow box separate from the frame? Any advice on how to proceed further would be most helpful
Elaine says
Nikki – The frame/shadow box was custom built by my framer and the flag just sits on a shelf that was covered in the same linen background.

Good luck! Would love to see how you framed yours!

Oh I adore this! Nothing warms my heart more than to see how people honor their past in a daily way. To take such an heirloom and give it a place of prominence in your home is what “decor” is all about. Thank you for posting and Happy Memorial Day!

Thank you for your kind words Mithra! Enjoy your holiday weekend as well!

Worth sharing! I posted this on a couple of military sites, including Armed Forces Insurance, which I love.

My Dad passed a month ago and I’ve been in search for the perfect case for his flag. Nothing has cut it, but today you have ended my search (and brought a tear to my eye)! Thank you so so much for this!
Elaine says
Suzanne – My sympathy to you for the loss of your dear father. I am so glad you liked the flag case I designed for my father-in-law’s flag. It’s an honor to know that you will duplicate it! I hope it will warm your heart and bring you peace to have it displayed in your home. xo Elaine
