Thanksgiving is over and its officially time to decorate for Christmas. Last week I shared some decorating inspiration for gorgeous Christmas urns for your front porch. Today’s post is all about pretty Christmas staircases.
Decorating Your Stairs for the Holidays
When you head to the nursery for your greens for the Christmas planters, don’t forget about your stairs! It’s usually one of the first things your guests will see as they enter your house and its a great opportunity to make it a grand entrance.
You can keep it simple or go all out with your staircase. Following are some great examples of decking out the stairs.
Gold & White Elegant Christmas Staircase
I’m not doing much decorating for the holidays this year as I am still on the mend from my broken arm. I’m doing well but now have some shoulder issues as a result. If I were decorating though, I would be duplicating this elegant staircase that I found in Traditional Home. It is so elegant and would look beautiful on my newly remodeled stairs.
I am in love with the gold and white damask ribbon and the dangling gold pine cones. So so pretty! I now have a year to find a similar ribbon for next year’s decorating!
Magnolia Leaves & Pine Cones
Magnolia leaves are a nice change from evergreen garland. This is such a pretty combination from Atta Girl Says with pine cones and green and white gingham ribbon.
Christmas Bannister with Garland and White Lights
This beautifully lit garland lightens up this entryway. Sparkling white lights always look great on trees, mantels and banisters. The only clincher is you need that damn outlet nearby if you don’t want cords in the way! For me, outlets never seem to be where I need them!
Pine Cones & Tulip Garland
I love the contrast of dark winter greens and white flowers such as these white tulips. Such a pretty Christmas Staircase. I’ll be pulling together some evergreen branches from my yard and adding some white flowers for my table for a similar look.
So take note and don’t throw away any of your evergreen scraps. Gather them together in small bunches and fill your vases with them. You can add flowers, red berry branches and twigs for pretty arrangements throughout the house. I love adding a touch of Christmas to every room including little floral arrangements on night stands and bathroom counters.
In this picture from a few years ago, I gathered some leftover evergreen trimmings, put them in a vase filled with cranberries for my powder room.
Simple Garland and Ribbon Staircase
Sometimes its best to just keep it simple! This staircase has a gentle swag evergreen garland with gold ribbon accents. It’s festive yet uncomplicated. Great bench in the foyer by the way!
Pretty Christmas Staircase with Stockings
Whether you have a fireplace or staircase, stockings add a fun element to Christmas decorations. These red stockings offer the perfect pop of color to this pretty Christmas staircase.
Stair Swag
Here are two great ways to use garland swags to decorate your staircase. This stairwell is beautiful on its own with all the gorgeous moulding. By only decorating the bottom of the rail, you can still see the beauty of the woodwork. The swag compliments this pretty staircase but doesn’t detract from it.
Berries & Twigs
Instead of running garland up the stairs, try several evergreen swags tied to the spindles. The red berries, green bulbs and ribbon on these swags offer color and a unique design.
Have fun with your decorating! I’ll be adding poinsettias, candles and some evergreen arrangements to add some holiday flair to my home. Playing Christmas music and having my fireplace on will also help put me in the mood. Hopefully for next year’s holiday season I will be completely healed and able to decorate full force! In the meantime, I will find a lot of beautiful holiday decorating inspiration.
Which of these Christmas staircases is your favorite? Do you decorate the same every year or do you like to change it up?

These are absolutely beautiful! And so different than the standard staircase decor we’ve seen for years!

So the problem has always been how to attach greenery to the staircase without marring the paint or scratching the wood. Ideas?
Elaine says
Sue – I usually attach with ribbon or twine which doesn’t mark up the wood. You could also try fishing line. It won’t show and should be easy on the wood as well. Good luck!
